How to "Learn" From the Ground Up By Emilee Riggin

Learning, no matter your age, can be tough. It can feel uncomfortable, even cringe-worthy at times.
I think this discomfort stems from the fact that learning is a reminder: there's still room for growth. We are not yet finished. There's always space left to develop.
When we learn something new, we acknowledge that we’re not done yet. We are in progress.
And if you’re making your way to your mat, I believe you’re already on a path of personal development. ✨
Life often feels like we’re bouncing from one task to another, checking boxes, and marking off accomplishments. There's pride in finishing something, and that sense of completion makes us hungry for the next challenge. It's human nature, right?
But here’s the thing—how do we fully embrace all the beauty life has to offer, instead of simply checking off tasks?
The answer lies in rooting ourselves in what matters most.
This month, I've been focusing on my Samasthiti. It’s also called Mountain Pose, and the direct translation means “equal standing.” When I first took yoga training, it was referred to as Tadasana—but both terms are correct, just from different lineages and teachers. A little linguistic digression from me!
But what really matters here is this essential pose: it’s all about grounding through your feet. By pressing down into the earth, you create space in your body, while also lifting through your spine. It might even feel like you’re standing taller just by connecting to the earth beneath you.
It’s strange, isn’t it? The paradox that by pressing down, we rise up.
To feel strong, we must first ground ourselves. True stability comes when we root down into our foundation. In yoga, every pose begins with Samasthiti. Before we rise and stretch, we must root down. It’s this duality of pressing and lifting that brings balance.
So maybe this week, as you step onto your mat, focus on connecting with your foundation. Ground yourself.
Step to the top of your mat.
Lift your toes.Settle into the four corners of your feet.Feel the soles spread out. Then press down.Feel yourself rise up.
Welcome to the journey, my friends.
I’m so happy to be here with you.
