Saying "yes" to sunshine...

As I interact with my high schoolers every day, I am struck by their disconnection from themselves and their bodies. For many of them, the whole world exists under the glass cases of their cell phone screens. As a school teacher, I get to call them out of that space—with help of the beloved Yondr pouches that hold their precious phones—and I call them into a learning experience. I help them connect the dots and create new neural pathways. Instead of staring at glassy, slack-jawed teens, slouched over rectangles, I see brilliant light from their eyes as their minds begin to grasp deeper and more meaningful language and ideas.

That is the gift of being a teacher: the ability to call students back to something more meaningful.

As the month flips to June, I am ever-more excited about what we are doing at Grassroots and what that call means for our community. Our calendars opened for long days and warm nights, we can all take part in the full-tilt of expression of our humanity as we laugh, breathe, and move together this summer. ☀️

This is not simply an exercise in the body; this is an exercise of the mind and of the human spirit. Our theme for our Summer Program is to “GET IRL.” For those not familiar with colloquialisms from video games, IRL means “in real life.” This summer will be injected with fun, novelty, and meaningful experiences that build community that take part, not in a virtual reality, but the real one we all share. From getting outside to getting into our bodies, we come together to connect with ourselves and with each other.

I would like to personally invite our Grassroots Community into our Wonder and Awe Documentary and Discussion on Sunday, June 14th from 4p-6:30. I consider this the launching point of the catalytic movement that will get us into our bodies and off our screens.

And I can't help but wonder, How might we nudge the needle towards a happier and more connected community?

Check out all the cool stuff below to find your sunshine this summer.

Cheers! 🌱

What are we doing? What does Grassroots offer?

People need access to a place where they can feel and not be judged. Where they can speak and listen to their bodies to find their healing. And this should not be a privilege to those with money or time. Mental health starts with us taking care of ourselves, and Grassroots is the community that is built by it’s members showing up for each other and for themselves.

And all I can think is, “Hells yeah!”

This is not about me, although I am grateful for the abundance of love and affection I get… this is about all of you. This is about each of us taking ownership for what we need in this one life to fully participate in it. There are many times I pull up to take a class, and I think, thank goodness this space is here. Getting into your body isn’t easy, and it definitely is a learning journey-- full of ups and downs-- but ultimately, Grassroots teaches us: we got this and we got each other.

So join us for summer. Let’s get off our phones, televisions, and consoles. Let’s join our friends for sound baths, take our kids to the yoga classes, and bond with our mates during yoga hikes. This isn’t about doing “yoga,” it’s about carving time to check in with the reality of life. Let’s move and breath and laugh together.

We love and appreciate you!

Sending you SO much love for this wonderful summer ahead of us. Don't hesitate to reach out with questions! We are here to help!

- Emilee and Brigette 💚
