Life needs the highs and lows. It really does.
There is definitely an ebb and flow of life. Sometimes we have chapters that are bursting at the seams with things and people... and then there's other chapters where feelings like loneliness and restlessness stretch out. And we can measure these chapters by considering if this chapter either takes our energy or it depletes it. The same is true for individual experiences in your day-to-day life: you can have things in life that fill your bucket, and you can have things in life that empty your bucket.
And the challenge—nay, the beauty of life—is that both these things have to happen. We cannot always fill our bucket, otherwise we would be overflowing and unmanageable... but we also can't live our life scraping the bottom of the bucket and wondering why we can't get anything up.
Consider the Infinity symbol. That looping, swooping figure 8 that goes back and forth, back and forth. Circling and returning, it represents the ebb and a flow of the give and take with life. If we follow this line of thinking, we can consider that in order to maintain integrity onwards and onwards indefinitely, it isn't about stillness or action. True sustainability is then about that movement between the two opposing forces. It's about finding the comfort in the movement itself and trusting that the reprieve will equal the challenge.
My wish for myself and for all of us is that we are both content with where we are and perceptive of where we are going-- for these two things operating in tandem, create a never-ending, constant rhythm from which to build a life.
So, as you move through this transition from wide open spaces of sunshine to holidays with closed rooms and cloistered spaces, remember to watch your ebb and flow. Remember there are bucket-fillers and there are bucket-emptiers, and we must have both to keep the rhythm of our life.
