The Yoga Paradox: Mastering the Art of Being Both Teacher and Student
On Saturday, I attended Yukari's class, and I have to say, I just LOVE being a student. A good yoga teacher guides you on a journey of self-discovery that challenges you and leaves you feeling stronger. In Yukari's class, I especially appreciate how she brings awareness to those tiny, often overlooked muscles, helping us build confidence in our movement—both on and off the mat.
B.K.S. Iyengar, the esteemed yoga teacher (1918-2014) who introduced props like blocks, blankets, and straps, once said, "[t]hrough practice, we achieve harmony between body and mind, which helps us remain stable and grounded amidst life’s fluctuations." His insight underscores that yoga is not just about physical strength, but about cultivating a balanced state of being.
When we step onto the mat with an instructor’s guidance, we enter a unique space where we become self-teachers. By applying their suggestions to our bodies and minds, we engage in a continuous cycle of self-directed learning and teaching. This dynamic process allows us to explore and understand ourselves more deeply.
In this way, each of us becomes both a teacher and a student simultaneously. Isn’t that a beautiful and empowering aspect of the practice?
