As I approach the last six weeks of my leave of absence from the Carson City School District, I am confronted with a whirlwind of emotions about returning to the classroom. This past year has brought significant changes for me, and I am not the same person who left.
When I initially stepped away, I was utterly burned out. I felt anger towards the system and its leaders for what seemed like a lack of genuine concern. However, during this time away, I've discovered a new path, one that ignites my passion for connecting people with their bodies and transforming their lives.
My belief in education has transformed over the past year, and it feels monumental. Despite the predictable overwhelm that awaits me, this time away has given me a clearer perspective on what it truly means to be an educator. On one hand, there's the security of a steady income and excellent health insurance. On the other, there's the rigid structure and the emotional and physical demands that leave little room for flexibility.
As much as I look forward to reconnecting with students, I dread the isolation I experienced as a teacher. The constant responsibility for others’ needs, coupled with the lack of support from administration, made the profession feel incredibly lonely. While I cherished the connections I made with students, the overall experience left me feeling unsupported and isolated.
The idea that the education system owes us nothing but demands everything is a sentiment shared by many educators. We're expected to be a safe space for students, even when we're struggling ourselves. The paradox of caring for so many while feeling uncared for is a reality that many educators face daily.
As I prepare to return, I am determined to avoid getting lost in the turbulence of an unsupportive system. This determination has inspired me to create a new group specifically designed to empower and support teachers of the Carson City School District throughout the school year.
Introducing: A Place for Educators
This collective space is dedicated to providing educators with the support they need, not just professionally but personally. It’s a place where we ask, "How is your soul doing?" instead of just, "How is your SLG going?" It's about addressing the whole person, including how you're handling your kids, spouse, and daily life challenges.
We believe that for educators to truly thrive, they need to prioritize themselves for perhaps the first time in their careers. This group aims to foster a community where teachers can feel valued, heard, and supported in all aspects of their lives.
Special Opportunity: Reiki Training for Educators
To kick off this initiative, we are offering a healing modality of Reiki. On August 1st and August 2nd, we will be hosting a Reiki training session and inviting all educators to attend.
Reiki is a powerful process for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. This training will not only provide you with valuable skills to manage your own well-being but also equip you to bring a sense of calm and resilience into your classroom. It’s a chance to connect with fellow educators, share experiences, and build a supportive network.
Reiki Training: August 1st and August 2nd (register here)
This training is open to all Grassroots Students, but we welcome Educators to come together in this space. It’s an investment in your personal and professional well-being, providing you with tools to navigate the challenges of the upcoming school year with resilience and grace.
Join us in creating a space where educators can move from rage to resilience, empowering each other to navigate the complexities of the teaching profession with strength and solidarity. Together, we can transform the experience of teaching into one of empowerment and support.
